Author’s Bio: The Reader Connection Point

Darla Denton did a post on a writer’s bio. I recently re-wrote my own bio. We have two different styles but we want to achieve the same goal. We want to connect to potential readers.

cloudfourI went with a short bio, where hers is a bit longer and includes information about her blog. I went with smaller bits of details strung together where she expounded on her details. She has a cute selfie and I currently have a photo of my cat.

Author biographies are important. They are yet another way to promote yourself and your brand. Do not underestimate them. This is your platform, use it to your advantage.

The goal of every “About Me” section should be to connect with a reader. It isn’t actually about you, it is about your reader. People, it works. I have bought books because someone shared a tiny bit of their life and I related.

Shannon Thompson, a YA author, talked about drug abuse and I made a connection. Skye Callahan, an erotic romance author said she revamped her writing space and since I just now carved out my own nook, I really want to grab one of her stories and sit down for a read.

However you work your bio, it needs to connect you to the reader. Little personal bits of information is all it takes. Show you are human

  • Blogs should be in first person
  • Third party sites should be in third person
  • Imagine your perfect reader, now how would you connect with them?
  • When in doubt, keep it short.
  • Photos are encouraged (yeah, I’m working on this)
  • Turn off the comments on your blog pages, except your blog posts.
  • Mention where you live
  • Mention your interests
  • Give the visitor an idea of what and how you write. It should reflect your genre.
  • Have one Call to Action, be it buy my books, connect with me, follow me, sign up for something
  • Keep tweaking it. Never let it get stale.

When I started considering marketing and promotion this was my first assignment to myself. Re-write my bio.

What do you like to see in an author’s bio? Leave a comment and go forth and re-write your own biographies.
